This is a 'book' I've made for the monthly AreYouBookEnough-challenge on Instagram. This is a bookart community hosted by Sarah Maker that makes a book every month inspired by a certain theme. This is my answer to the theme 'gather'.
I gathered these pebbles, during a family-trip through the USA.  They found their way into this folded structure. The structure is called the blizzard box, designed by Hedi Kyle as described in her always inspirational book; 'the art of the fold'. They are guided by the lyrics of a Dutch song by Bram Vermeulen called 'The Stone'. Describing how when you move a pebble, you for ever change the course of the water.

This is my answer to the theme 'closed'. At first glance a very normal case bound book. A linnen spine, headbands, decorative paper on the cover. But taking a better look, you see it's a book that nobody will ever know the content.

Description:
This poetry book was designed in close collaboration with the poet.
As a poet and a geologist, the poems contain many references to geological terms and themes, as well as to dreams or dream states.
The title is a geological term that is used to describe an area of land where the underlying rock is exposed to the earth's surface.
I thought this could be nicely portrayed by torn tracing paper. The torn lines represent the capricious shapes of the land and bedrock.
The transparency gives it a bit of a dreamy look.
As for the materials, everything works together to give the whole book a sort of earthy feel. The linnen thread, the stone-surface paper, the torn edges of the flyleaf.

Description:
A one of a kind note-/sketchbook filled with a cloudy, gray/green paper and covered with a silky soft, freckled leather. Finished off with subtle details like handmade silk headbands, coloured edges and a single embroidery stitch.

own work for a miniature exhibition

Description:
I was asked to make something for a miniature exposition organized by Roswitha Witten and Christel Harms. They asked for a work, no bigger than a matchbox that could be send by mail.
I've made a tactile, intuitive work; two paper pebbles with a content. One light, one dark.

Description:
This is a 'book' I've made for the monthly AreYouBookEnough-challenge on Instagram. This is a bookart community hosted by Sarah Maker that makes a book every month inspired by a certain theme. This is my answer to the theme 'heal'.
The most beautiful kind of healing (repairing) I know, comes from the Japanese art of kintsugi, in which broken ceramics are repaired with gold. I love the philosophy behind this; cracks (and imperfections) are not something to hide, but instead be displayed with pride because it's what makes you unique. It's a testament to life and it adds to ones beauty. I found a similar Japanese approach to repairing textiles called sashiko in which beautiful patterns are stitched on torn fabrics.
My entry is inspired by these two methods of mending, freely translating it to paper. I've glued 'broken' pieces of paper back together with golden glue and stitched and woven the holes with golden threads.
For the structure I used Hedi Kyle's blizzard book construction. I've torn and repaired the folded cover to match the theme of the book.

Description:
This book was inspired by an old book about organisation of Finnish pulp factories; Finncell. The original book fell apart, but it still stood out because of its beautiful graphic design. Throughout this book I've reused some beautiful transparent papers with graphic patterns as well as some photographs of the pulp factories in the night for the endpapers.

Description:
The book tells a story about a girl who travels by ship pretending to be a man in the times of the VOC.
I've created a book that suggests that it was bound on the ropes of a ship. I've used characteristic deadeyes and ship knots on the cover. When you open the book, you will find the sails shining through de parchment cover. I play with perspective by making the title only visible from a certain angle.
The use of a parchment as the cover material refers to the fact that they used to reuse old parchment nautical chart as book covers.

The beauty of tickets lies in the torn edges along the perforated lines. Those play a main role in this little book, where all the pages are torn on all sides.  
Strong magnets give the book a subtle closure.

Description:
A colourful book with lasered sections, bound with colourful thread. By a small rotation of the same shape, you create a sort of 3D-shape. When you open the book, the light almost seems to shine from the inside out.

Description:
I've designed and made the structure for this triptych for the photographer Aukje Bakker. She was looking for a nice way to present her photos in series of three. It appears to be a simple folded structure. By adding an extra hinge in the cover, the structure can lie nice and flat. The magnets that are fully integrated in the cardboard, make for a nice and subtle closure.
